Perchance Tea
—
Branding, art direction, website design and interior design consultation for Perchance, a Vancouver-based café specializing in high-end bubble tea.
Perchance serves handcrafted bubble tea that is made with all-natural, fresh ingredients and premium and rare Chinese tea. The café is located in an established area and was looking for a vibrant and fun brand that drew in younger customers from the nearby university and neighbouring schools. In response, I developed a concept based on the question: What if there were tiny characters living inside bubble tea pearls?
Working alongside illustrator—and genius—Josh Holinaty, we developed a suite of 5000 (!!!) completely unique character illustrations to be used in-store on stickers for cups, signage and other marketing materials. These were paired with a spirited wordmark and bright and playful colour palette.
To create so many unique illustrations, Josh developed a random character-generator engine specifically for this project, utilizing a set number of illustrated characteristics that were used as base elements to form poses ie. hairstyles, pants, shirts, shoes, shorts, leg and arm positions, etc… He then ran the generator—which had the potential to create quite literally millions of unique characters—and in minutes we had 5000 illustrations. Something special for every cup.
